SPORTS — Queens finish as runners up at Queen City Relays

Youth was served for the Del Rio Queens track and field team at this year’s Queen City Relays.

The majority of Del Rio’s first place finishers, medalists and point-getters were underclassmen, showing that the team could be a force for years to come.

As a team, Del Rio finished second in the girls varsity division. San Angelo Central took first with 186 points. Following Del Rio was Eagle Pass, Uvalde and Alpine.

Del Rio’s athletes took first in four different events, but junior Ryland Ross did much of the heavy lifting as she was first in the 800 meters and the 1,600 meters. She won the 800 meters in 2:23.60 and crossed the finish line first in the 1,600 meters in 5:35.04.

Junior Aryana Trevino was also an event winner, taking first in the shot put with a toss of 31 feet, 3 inches.

Senior Yolisbeth Flores was the other event champion, taking first in the pole vault after clearing the bar at eight feet.

Del Rio also had several athletes make the podium by finishing among the top three in their respective events. That group included the 400-meter relay team (3rd, 52.76 seconds), freshman Samirah Clark (2nd, 100-meter hurdles, 18.26 seconds; 3rd, 300-meter hurdles, 51.61 seconds; and 3rd, triple jump, 31 feet, 8.5 seconds), the 800-meter relay team (2nd, 1:54.09), freshman Triniti Prado (2nd, 300-meter hurdles, 51.49 seconds), and the 1,600-meter relay team (2nd, 4:27.16).

The top six finishers in each event also earned points for their teams. Athletes earning points for the Queens were as follows:

Sophomore Keziah Bishop – 3,200 meters, 4th, 12:52.07; 1,600 meters, 4th, 5:50.08

Junior Hayden Garcia – 100-meter hurdles, 4th, 13.11 seconds; 200 meters, 4th, 27.28 seconds

Freshman Hailey Gandy – High jump, 5th, 4 feet, 6 inches

Junior Fernanda De Luna – Discus, 5th, 88 feet, 9 inches

Freshman Kim Ledezma – 400 meters, 5th, 1:06.39

Junior Alexa Sanchez – 800 meters, 6th, 2:55.85

Senior Alissa Chavarria – Discus, 6th, 88 feet, 1.5 inches

Also competing for Del Rio were junior Perla Rosas (7th, 300-meter hurdles, 55.76 seconds; 7th, long jump, 14 feet, 7 inches; 7th, triple jump, 30 feet, 8 inches; 11th, 100-meter hurdles, 20.21 seconds), junior Analise Dominguez (8th, 100 meters, 13.55 seconds), junior Rayne Hyten (9th, 100 meters, 13.85 seconds), sophomore Sophia Valdez (9th, 200 meters, 28.04 seconds), Hailey Gandy (10th, long jump, 13 feet, 11 inches; 14th, 100 meters, 14.41 seconds), sophomore Kaylie Morales (10th, 1,600 meters, 6:33.14), Yolisbeth Flores (12th, 200 meters, 29.17 seconds), Triniti Prado (13th, 100-meter hurdles, 20.67 seconds), senior Arlene Salas (16th, 400 meters, 1:17.28), senior Beatriz Paredes (17th, 400 meters, 1:17.30) and senior Annalilia Ibarra (18th, 400 meters, 1:19.97).
