Del Rio came away from its first basketball tournament of the season with a pair of wins and plenty of learning experience.
The Queens (3-3) finished 2-3 at the Harlandale tournament over the weekend, beating Eagle Pass and John Paul and losing to Brackenridge, Roosevelt and host Harlandale.
“Our kids played hard on the defensive end and competed in every game. We just fell short,” Soto said.
The three-day tournament began on Thursday. Del Rio faced Brackenridge and Harlandale on day one.
Brackenridge jumped out to a 17-11 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The lead grew to 26-15 at halftime before Brackenridge handed the Queens a 53-32 loss.
Makayla Lewis and Nelly Robles led Del Rio with seven points each. Araceli Hernandez had five points, Joselyn Gonzalez had four points, Sydney Ballard had three points, and Marina Jimenez and Sharleen Perez each had two points.
Against Harlandale, the Queens once again fell behind early on. They trailed 19-8 after the first quarter and 29-14 at halftime. Harlandale’s lead was 20 points by the end of the third quarter before closing out Del Rio, 63-47.
Ballard led Del Rio with 11 points. Sierra Horton had nine points, Gonzalez and Allie Rodriguez each had eight points, Jimenez had four points, Lewis had three points, Alexia Muñiz had two points, and Robles and Perez each had one point.
The second day of the tournament found Del Rio taking on John Paul and fellow District 30-6A team, and rival, Eagle Pass.
Del Rio jumped on John Paul early on, building a 28-7 lead by halftime. The Queens defense held John Paul to just one point in the second quarter.
The Queens didn’t let up in the second half and took the game, 50-21.
Muñiz had 13 points to lead Del Rio’s scorers. Gonzalez had 11 points. Lewis had nine points, Rodriguez had eight, Perez finished with five points, and Ballard and Horton each contributed two points.
Against Eagle Pass it was more of the same as Del Rio started with a 15-4 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.
The lead was 28-9 at halftime as Del Rio cruised to a 54-22 win.
Rodriguez had 12 points to lead Del Rio. Muñiz, Ballard and Gonzalez each had nine points, Robles had six points, Lewis had five points, and Hernandez and Horton each had two points.
The final day of the tournament found Del Rio taking on Roosevelt in a contest that was competitive for three quarters before Roosevelt pulled away late.
The two teams were tied at 8-8 at the end of the first quarter, and Del Rio trailed just by two, 19-17, at halftime.
As the third quarter came to an end, the Queens were down by just three, 28-25, but Roosevelt outscored Del Rio in the fourth quarter, 14-4, to earn the 42-29 win.
Ballard had seven points, Gonzalez had six points, Lewis, Robles and Jimenez each had four points, and Horton and Rodriguez each had two points.
Del Rio is scheduled to return to action tonight when they host Crystal City at 6:30 p.m. at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium.
