A slow start didn’t deter the Queens in their contest this week against Carrizo Springs.

Del Rio was down 17-11 at halftime, but a 30-point second half turned a negative into a positive as the Queens rallied for a 41-40 road win. It’s the Queens’ 11th win of the season as they prepare for the start of district play Friday at Laredo LBJ.

After both teams scored four points in the first quarter, Carrizo Springs scored 13 in the second quarter to take a 17-11 lead.

Del Rio kept pace in the third quarter, though they trailed by seven headed into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter belonged to the Queens. Del Rio held Carrizo Springs to seven points in the quarter including just two baskets from the field. On the other side of the ball, the three-headed monster of Sydney Ballard, Joselyn Gonzalez and Nelly Robles teamed up to score 15 points and helped lead Del Rio all the way back, eventually earning the one-point win.

Ballard finished with 11 points overall to lead Del Rio. Alexia Muñiz and Robles each had six points, Annette Betancourt had four points, Makayla Lewis had two points, and Araceli Hernandez and Marina Jimenez each had one point to round the scoring for Del Rio.

The Queens’ next home game will be Tuesday, Dec. 21 when they host the Laredo United Lady Longhorns at 2 p.m.
