Several Del Rio track and field athletes are one step closer to competing at the State meet.
Five members of the team won their events at the District 30-6A Track and Field meet recently in Laredo, and several more finished in the top four in their events to advance to today’s Area meet at New Braunfels Canyon.
Senior Madelyn Hernandez won the girls’ pole vault after clearing 10 feet. Her height tied a school record.
Junior Ryland Ross finished second in the girls’ 800 meters in a time of 2:22.694 to advance to Area.
Rounding out the girls’ Area qualifiers was the 400-meter relay team. The team of Rayne Hyten, Hayden Garcia, Mia Maldonado and Analise Dominguez finished fourth overall in a time of 50.679 seconds. Trinti Prado and Yolisbeth Flores are the team’s alternates.
The Rams track and field team qualified in nine different events, taking first in four of them.
Senior Emmanuel Da’Vonte Reyes won the 200 meters in 22.183 seconds. He also finished second in the long jump after leaping 22 feet, 2.5 inches, making him a dual qualifier.
Senior Jayden Blanks won the district title in the triple jump with a distance of 43 feet, 10.75 inches.
Sophomore Ethan Dobbins won the district crown in the high jump after clearing the bar at 6 feet, 6 inches. His performance tied a school record set in 1978 by John Mellot. Dobbins was also part of the 800-meter relay team, that included Brian Natividad, Jacob Ortiz and Vonte Reyes, that qualified for Area by finishing fourth in 1:30.49.
Senior Juandres Flores also won a district title, taking first in the pole vault with a height of 14 feet, 6 inches.
Sophomore Damian Guerrero earned two spots at the Area meet. He took second in the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 9.25 inches, and he was fourth in the discus with a toss of 135 feet, 2 inches.
Senior Jason Main was also a double qualifier. He took third in the 800 meters in a time of 1:58.944 and was third in the pole vault by clearing 13 feet.
Senior Landon Sutton is also headed to Area after taking third in the discus with a throw of 137 feet, 1 inch.
