The Queens’ win streak is over, but it didn’t go down without a fight.

Del Rio High’s volleyball lost for the first time in seven matches, falling to Midland High Tuesday evening in five games.

The Queens lost 25-20, 25-23, 17-25, 17-25, 7-15. Del Rio is now 14-7 on the season.

Del Rio will close out its non-district schedule tonight at home against Midland Legacy, formerly Midland Lee. Sub-varsity is scheduled to play at 4:30 p.m. followed by varsity at 5:30 p.m. at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium.

Fans can purchase tickets for the match online at https://gofan.co/app/school/TX22694 or through the GoFan app on their cellphone.

It looked like Del Rio would run its win streak to eight when they took the first two sets against the Bulldogs. Midland battled back to take the next two to force the fifth set, a race to 15.

It was a race that Midland would win.

“We didn’t finish as strong as we started, but the girls never stopped hustling and fought through the end of every match,” Queens head coach Angelica Rivera said.

Karolina Alderete had 16 kills to lead Del Rio while Kylie Ramirez had 11 kills. Syann Casillas had 36 assists and added 16 digs.

Angela Mijares led the team with 25 digs. Sherlyn Estrada added 15 digs.

This week’s games against Midland schools were designed as a final test for the Queens before they began play in District 30-6A. Friday’s match against Legacy will be Del Rio’s last until Saturday, Sept. 24, when the team travels to Laredo to face the LBJ Lady Wolves at 1 p.m. That will begin district play for Del Rio.

As a way to say “thank you” to the fans, and to give supporters a chance to meet the girls, the Queens volleyball program is hosting a “Set Off” Sunday, Sept. 18, in the Del Rio High School student parking lot from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Food trucks will be present.
