Del Rio could get used to being at the top of the District 30-6A volleyball standings.

Tuesday, the Queens (16-8, 2-0) improved their district mark to 2-0 with a thrilling five-set win over the visiting Laredo United South Lady Panthers (0-2). The two teams exchanged sets until the Queens got the upper hand in the fifth and deciding set.

The Queens are now tied with Laredo United and Laredo Alexander at 2-0 in district play.

Del Rio took the first set, 25-19. South won the second set, 25-18, but the Queens outlasted the Lady Panthers in a tough third set, 28-26. South evened the match-up with a brutal 25-12 win in the fourth set.

The Queens dug deep and pulled out the win with a tight win in the fifth set, 15-11, to stay unbeaten in the young district season.

“It wasn’t easy!” Queens head coach Angelica Rivera said in a text message in regards to the win.

Syann Casillas was working overtime in the match, racking up 44 assists to lead the Queens. She also had 21 digs, which placed her second on the team behind Angela Mijares. Sherlyn Estrada and Karolina Alderete each had 15 digs.

Alderete led the team with 21 kills. Yuridia Muñiz had 12 kills followed by Kylie Ramirez and Jazira Cuenca with seven kills each. Cuenca also had a pair of blocks.

After two matches Del Rio is one of three unbeaten teams in 30-6A. Defending district champions Laredo United (26-4, 2-0) had little trouble dispatching Eagle Pass (0-2) in three sets, 25-11, 25-13, 25-3.

Also unbeaten is Laredo Alexander (23-5, 2-0) as the Lady Bulldogs rolled through Laredo LBJ (13-14, 0-2), 25-12, 25-12, 25-16.

The ranks of the unbeaten will change in the next three matches as all three undefeated teams will face each other in that time. Del Rio will travel to Laredo twice – Saturday and Tuesday – to face United and Alexander, respectively. The Queens will play the Lady Longhorns Saturday at 1 p.m., and then will return to Laredo Tuesday to take on the Lady Bulldogs Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Del Rio’s next home match will be Saturday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m. at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium. That same day, United and Alexander will meet in what could be an early battle for first place in the district.
