Del Rio is one step closer from ending its volleyball playoffs drought.

The Queens defeated Laredo LBJ in four sets Tuesday for its third district win. That win, coupled with losses by Laredo United South and Eagle Pass, leaves the Queens with a two-match lead in the district standings with four matches left to play. The win also gives the Queens the head-to-head tiebreaker over LBJ should the two teams finish the season tied in the standings.

Del Rio (17-11, 3-3) won in four sets 25-23, 25-19, 24-26, 25-17.

Karolina Alderete had another strong match, leading the team with 14 kills and tying with Syann Casillas for second with 19 digs. Casillas also led the team with 38 assists.

Angela Mijares led the Queens with 22 digs, and Jazira Cuenca had three blocks and four kills to help power the Del Rio defense.

Kylie Ramirez added 12 kills, Yuri Muñiz had 10 kills, and Iva Garabedina had five kills. Sherlyn Estrada also had 13 digs for the Queens.

Tuesday’s match was also Senior Night. The Queens six seniors, and their parents, were recognized following the conclusion of the match. This year’s seniors are Ashlee Hernandez, Kylie Ramirez, Iva Garabedian, Valeria Galindo, Jessica Mata and Karolina Alderete.

District leaders Laredo United remained perfect in 30-6A, sweeping United South in three sets 25-17, 25-9, 25-18. Laredo Alexander remained one game behind United, taking down Eagle Pass in three sets 25-11, 25-17, 25-22.

With four matches left to play in the season, United sits atop the standings at 6-0. Alexander is second at 5-1, and Del Rio is in sole possession of third at 3-3. United South, LBJ and Eagle Pass are all tied for fourth at 1-5.

The Queens travel to Laredo Saturday to face United South at 1 p.m.

Next week the Queens close out their home schedule with a pair of matches. Tuesday night they will host district-leading Laredo United at 7 p.m. Then on Saturday the Queens will welcome Laredo Alexander to town for a 1 p.m. match. Both matches will be played at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium.
