While they haven’t played in front of the home fans yet, the Queens volleyball team has made itself at home away from Del Rio.
After one tournament and two matches on the road, Del Rio sits at 7-3 on the season with its first match at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium looming Tuesday.
Del Rio dropped its opening match of the season Aug. 10 at Incarnate Word High School in San Antonio.
“The girls played an amazing five sets. They played their hearts out, but came up short,” assistant coach Nydia Fernandez said.
Del Rio dropped the first set, 25-16, but took the second set, 26-24. After losing the third set, 25-19, they came back to force a fifth set with a 25-16 win in the fourth set. In the fifth set, Incarnate Word was just too much and won, 15-5.
A few days later the Queens were back in San Antonio to compete in the Edgewood Tournament. Del Rio wound up taking second in the tournament. They went 2-1 on the first day, and then went unbeaten on day two, entering the championship round 5-1 in six matches. They’d win one more match before falling in the championship match.
Del Rio was back on the road Tuesday night as they traveled to San Antonio to face Veterans Memorial High School. They came home with a win in four sets – 15-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18.
“The girls played incredible tonight and came out on top,” Fernandez said Tuesday.
The Queens will travel to San Angelo this weekend to participate in the annual Nita Vannoy Memorial Tournament. Then, the Queens will face Carrizo Springs in their only non-district match at home. Sub-varsity is scheduled to play at 5 p.m. while varsity is scheduled to take the court at 6:15 p.m.
Tickets for the home match must be purchased online. Tickets are $4 for adults 18 years and up, $2 for students ages 5 to 17. To buy your ticket, go online and visit https://www.vancoevents.com/us/eventlist/delrioathletics?embed=1 and click on the link for the Aug. 24 Queens volleyball match.
