Forgive the Queens volleyball team if it seems like the players are in seventh heaven right now.

Headed into tonight’s match-up with Midland High, the Queens have won their last seven matches to up their season record to 14-6.

Head coach Angelica Rivera said she was excited to see how the Queens match up against Midland’s schools this week. Del Rio hosts Midland High Tuesday and then will welcome Midland Legacy, formerly Midland Lee, to town Friday. Both varsity matches are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets for the sub-varsity and varsity matches can be purchased online at https://gofan.co/app/school/TX22694 or on the GoFan mobile app on your cellphone.

Del Rio’s latest win came Saturday as they traveled to Cotulla and earned the team’s seventh straight win in four sets. Del Rio took the first set, 25-17, but lost the second set 25-21. They then won the third set, 25-10, before completely dominating the fourth set, 25-4.

“We started a little slow but picked it up at the end,” Rivera said.

The Queens’ Guard, its strong presence at the net, had a big day as Karolina Alderete, Kylie Ramirez and Iva Garabedian each had seven kills.

Syann Casillas led the team with 30 assists, and Angela Mijares had 12 digs to lead the Queens. Chloe Vargas pitched in with 10 digs.

The matches against the Midland schools will be Del Rio’s final non-district tune-ups. District play begins Saturday, Sept. 24, when the Queens travel to Laredo to take on the Laredo LBJ Lady Wolves.

As a way to say “thank you” to the fans, and to give supporters a chance to meet the girls, the Queens volleyball program is hosting a “Set Off” Sunday, Sept. 18, in the Del Rio High School student parking lot from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Food trucks will be present.
