With the window of opportunity for a late season push to the playoffs closing, the Del Rio Queens volleyball team knows every match counts.
Tuesday the short-handed Queens suffered their eighth consecutive loss as they fell to the district leaders Laredo United in three games. Del Rio lost 25-10, 25-11, 25-9, to fall to 12-17 overall and 0-8 in District 30-6A.
United stays atop the district standings with a 9-0 mark in district play.
With four matches remaining on the regular season schedule for the Queens, Del Rio is facing a tough hill to climb should they eye a spot in the postseason.
With four matches left in the regular season, the Queens would need to win out and have Laredo United South lose the remainder of its matches to force a play-in for the final playoff spot. South is currently in fourth place in the district at 4-4 and has one win over Del Rio already this season.
If Del Rio loses any of its next four matches, or if South wins any of its next four matches, then the Queens would be eliminated from the playoff hunt.
United leads the district with a 9-0 record. Laredo Alexander is second at 7-1 followed by Eagle Pass at 5-3 and then United South. Laredo LBJ is 3-5, then comes Laredo Nixon at 1-8 and then Del Rio at 0-8.
In other district competition this past weekend, Eagle Pass defeated Laredo Nixon in four games, 21-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-16, to improve to 5-3 in district. Nixon falls to 1-8.
Alexander defeated Laredo United South in four games to improve to 7-1 and remain alone in second place. Alexander won 25-18, 19-25, 25-17, 28-26, to send United South to a district record of 4-4.
Laredo LBJ had a bye this weekend.
The Queens will host the Laredo Nixon Lady Mustangs Saturday at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium beginning at 1 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at https://www.vancoevents.com/us/eventlist/delrioathletics?embed=1 under the Queens volleyball vs Laredo Nixon tag.
