The race for the final two spots in District 30-6A in volleyball is coming down to the wire.

Del Rio missed out on a chance Saturday to clinch a playoff spot when the Queens dropped their fourth district match of the season to Laredo United South. Though Del Rio remains in third place overall, its grip on the third spot got a little looser.

With three matches left in the regular season, Del Rio is in control of its own destiny. One win in their next three matches and the Queens are into the playoffs for the first time since 2015.

The Queens are 3-4 in district with matches this week against the top two teams in the district – Laredo United, which stands alone atop the standings at 7-0; and Laredo Alexander, which is close behind at 6-1. The good news for the Queens is both those matches will be played at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium. Del Rio hosts Laredo United tonight at 7 p.m. and will host Alexander Saturday in the home finale at 1 p.m.

Del Rio closes out its regular season at Eagle Pass on Tuesday, Oct. 25. That match could have playoff implications depending on how this week plays out.

South is now 2-5 in district, one game behind Del Rio, and has split the season series with the Queens. South gets Laredo Alexander Tuesday and then Eagle Pass on Saturday before closing out the regular season against rival Laredo LBJ.

LBJ isn’t out of the playoff hunt either. The Lady Wolves are currently 1-6 but take on Eagle Pass tonight, a team they’ve already beaten once this season. They’ll face United Saturday before the game against South next Tuesday.

And then there’s Eagle Pass.

Eagle Pass has one district win this season … against Del Rio. The Lady Eagles could upset LBJ and South before closing out the season at home against Del Rio in a match that could determine third place or fourth place.
