Del Rio was determined to end the year on a positive note when it came to girls basketball.

The Queens traveled to Fort Stockton on Thursday and came home with a 42-36 win in their final non-district game of the season.

Del Rio took a 9-4 lead in the first quarter and never relinquished it, adding a big 16-point second quarter to build a lead that Fort Stockton was never able to erase.

Joselyn Gonzalez led the way for Del Rio, scoring 14 points including going 6-for-6 from the free throw line. All her points came after the first quarter.

Sydney Ballard finished with 11 including two 3-pointers in the second quarter that helped Del Rio stretch its lead to eight by halftime.

The first quarter was powered by an unlikely performance by Karolina Alderete. Though she did not hit a basket from the field, Alderete sank all four of her free throws in the first quarter, leading the team to a 9-4 advantage early on.

Ballard and Gonzalez came alive in the second quarter and from there Del Rio took control. They accounted for 13 of Del Rio’s 17 second-half points.

Nelly Robles had six points for the Queens. Alderete finished with four points, Makayla Lewis had three points, and Debahni Padilla and Allie Rodriguez each had two points.

Del Rio returns to action Tuesday when they travel to Laredo to face the Laredo Nixon Lady Mustangs at 6:30 p.m.

The Queens’ next home game will be Friday, Jan. 7, when they host the Laredo Alexander Lady Bulldogs at 6:30 p.m. at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium.
