Adventure was calling on Saturday, and there were plenty of people ready to answer the call.

Nearly 200 athletes entered the 2nd Annual Adventure on the Creek Saturday, which featured a 5.75-mile bicycle ride, a 2.5-mile run and wrapped up with competitors paddling 1.2-miles in a kayak along San Felipe Creek from Romanelli Park to Rotary Park.

Proceeds from the event enable the San Felipe Del Rio CISD’s Education Foundation to give grants to local teachers and scholarships to students.

“Last year, we gave nearly $40,000 in grants to teachers,” said Sylvia Owens, Education Foundation president. “This year, we really hope to surpass that thanks to the great turnout here.”

The top finisher in 46 minutes and 24 seconds was Laughlin student pilot Daniel Willett, who finished with a 6-minute cushion.

Willett had a slight advantage over the average weekend warrior, competing nationally and internationally for the LUX Cycling Team and represented the United States in various cycling competitions.

In 2019, he finished 26th in the U.S. National Championships for those Under 23.

Willett, who’s competed throughout the world, loved the course. “It’s a nice scenic course,” he said about the South Del Rio route. “This would be a great route for a bigger race.”

While running and biking are key parts of Willett’s training regimen, kayaking presented a new challenge for him.

“The kayaking was a different kind of hard,” he said. “I was just trying to not turn over and go straight.”

The competition had six categories. There was a division for solo competitors. Then, 3-person teams for first responders and business teams, an all-male category, co-ed teams and then teams representing elementary and secondary schools.

The top female finisher was Amelia Brown who finished the race in 1 hour, 8 minutes and 14 seconds.

The top business team was GOERO who finished the course in 52 minutes and 16 seconds.

The top first responders team was the U.S.P.O. Team with a 54 minutes and 4 second finish.

Fastest All-Male team was the Amistad Running Club, finishing in 54 minutes and 39 seconds.

The top Co-ed team was Send It, finishing in 1 hour, 3 minutes and 23 seconds.

The top elementary school finisher was the Ruben Chavira Elementary Super Cougars who finished the course in 1 hour, 4 minutes and 53 seconds.

The top secondary school was DRHS’s Live or Tri, finishing the course in 1 hour, 2 minutes and 58 seconds.
