SPORTS — Rams drop third straight, fall to Canyon

With one game left in 2020, the Rams basketball team is looking for a strong finish that could lead to a better 2021.

Del Rio dropped its third straight game Tuesday afternoon, falling to New Braunfels Canyon, 67-58. The loss drops the Rams to 5-7 on the season.

The Rams fell behind early, as Del Rio was held to just 11 points in the first quarter. Meanwhile, Canyon doubled up on Del Rio and grabbed a 22-11 advantage after the first period as six New Braunfels players scored.

However, the second quarter was a complete turnaround for the Rams as Del Rio outscored Canyon 23-17 to cut the deficit to 39-34 by halftime. It was a pair of 3-pointers by William Proffit and Del Rio going 6-for-6 from the free throw line that helped shoot the Rams back into the game.

The Rams trimmed the deficit to just two by the end of the third quarter as Del Rio outscored New Braunfels, 16-13, in the period to trail 52-50 headed into the fourth quarter of play.

But the Canyon defense and ice-cold shooting by the Rams in the fourth quarter sank any chances for Del Rio to complete the comeback. Del Rio made just three shots from the field in the fourth and Canyon scored 15 points to take the win by nine.

Proffit led Del Rio with 14 points and was one of four Rams to score in double digits. Nick Rivera had 12 points and Cesar Gavia and J.J. Cervantes each scored 10 points. Eli Webster added six points, and Luis Arteaga and Jose Hernandez each had three points to round out the scoring.

Del Rio was scheduled to play at Fredericksburg Wednesday to close out its 2020 schedule. The Rams will return to district play Tuesday, Jan. 5, when they host the Laredo Alexander Bulldogs at 6 p.m. at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium.
