Del Rio’s non-district schedule is complete, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

The Rams (0-4) took a 49-0 loss from the San Antonio Davenport Wolves (4-0) Friday night in San Antonio to close out their four-game non-district schedule. The change should help the Rams’ offense as Del Rio heads into play in 30-6A not have scored since the third quarter against San Antonio Warren in week two.

Friday night’s game didn’t start the Rams’ way either as Davenport scored on its first two possessions while Del Rio was forced to punt on their two.

With 3:25 left in the first quarter, quarterback Barrett Fallon scored on a four-yard run and helped give Davenport a 21-0 lead.

It didn’t help that the Davenport defensive line was larger than the Rams offensive line, shutting down running lanes and keeping quarterback Jayden Mendoza in check. Running back Nathan Mojica couldn’t find any running room and Fermin Rodriguez was sent out to punt after every Rams drive.

Davenport made it 28-0 when Tristan Torrez found Brandon Whitworth for a four-yard touchdown pass with 30 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The second quarter went a little better for Del Rio. Mendoza hit Aaron Smith for Del Rio’s first first down of the game. Mendoza scrambled for the Rams’ second first down, and then he hit Caleb Villa to move the Rams into Davenport’s side of the field.

But the drive eventually stalled, and Rodriguez came out to kick again, this time pinning Davenport at its own one-yard line.

After Davenport was able to get a first down, Del Rio’s Geovanni Rubio sacked Davenport’s quarterback to eventually force a Wolves punt.

Del Rio got a big play on a pass from Mendoza to Santiago Ortiz, but Del Rio was forced to punt again. Davenport followed suit as the teams went to halftime.

Davenport opened the third quarter with another rushing touchdown to increase its lead to 35-0.

The Rams’ run game got going on their next possession. Mojica broke off a big run to get Del Rio to the Davenport 43. Mojica’s name was called again and he spun, zoomed and bulled his way to the Wolves’ 21.

Del Rio eventually settled for a field goal attempt, but the kick was blocked and Davenport recovered the ball at its own 30-yard line. On the very next play, Davenport returned to the end zone on a 70-yard touchdown pass to push the lead to 42-0.

The lead grew to 49-0 in the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass by Brady Eggleston. With the game far out of reach, the Rams rested many of its starters on offense, turning the quarterbacking duties over to Ivan Ramirez and inserting Elias Lopez at running back.

Davenport did have another shot at the end zone after Christopher Aguilar recovered a Rams fumble, but Del Rio’s defense stood tall inside its on 10-yard line and kept Davenport out to help bring an end to the game.

The Rams will travel to Laredo Thursday to face the Laredo LBJ Wolves (4-0) at 7 p.m. at the Student Activity Complex.
