Errors proved to be the difference in the Del Rio Rams baseball team’s latest contest.
An error in the bottom of the eighth inning allowed the tying run to get aboard. A double and a sacrifice fly later and the Rams dropped a tough contest to San Antonio Cornerstone, 3-2, Monday night in San Antonio.
Del Rio committed four errors on the night, compared to just two errors charged to Cornerstone. The Rams also only managed three hits to Cornerstone’s six.
The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth inning.
Josh Adams led off the inning with a single to left field. After an error moved Adams to second, a passed ball allowed courtesy runner Kobe Cardenas move to third. Carlos Arredondo then singled to bring home Cardenas for a 1-0 Del Rio lead.
Cornerstone tied the game in the bottom of the inning, and it would remain 1-1 until the top of the eighth.
John Flores led the inning off with a walk for Del Rio. After a strikeout, Alex Rodriguez stepped in and deposited a double to right field. Flores motored around the bases and when the throw in was off, he raced home to put the Rams up, 2-1.
But in the bottom of the eighth, Cornerstone answered.
An error by Matt Mendez allowed the leadoff batter to reach base. He would score on a double to tie the game 2-2. After a wild pitch allowed the runner to move to third, the batter then floated a sacrifice fly to centerfield that was deep enough to plate the game-winner.
The loss spoiled a strong outing for Jose Borrego. He threw six innings and allowed just one run on five hits and four walks while striking out five. Rodriguez came into pitch in the seventh and was saddled with the loss.
The Rams will get just over a week off until they begin district play Tuesday at Laredo against LBJ at 7 p.m.
Del Rio’s next home game will be Friday, March 19, when they host Laredo United at 7 p.m. at The Bank & Trust Ram Field.
