Del Rio’s annual showcase of track and field welcomed 10 teams to town Friday as some of the best athletes in the area took part in this year’s Queen City Relays.
Alpine, Carrizo Springs, Comstock, Eagle Pass, Eagle Pass C.C. Winn, Heritage Academy, Hondo, San Angelo Central and Uvalde joined host Del Rio High in what was, for many, the first chance to compete at a meet this year.
As a team, Del Rio’s varsity boys finished second overall behind Eagle Pass High. San Angelo Central was third followed by Uvalde and Hondo.
Del Rio was well represented throughout the events, capturing medals in several of them and earning points towards the overall team total along the way.
The Rams took first in three events – the triple jump, the pole vault and discus.
Senior Jayden Blanks took first in the triple jump as he cleared 44 feet, 11.5 inches. Blanks had a busy meet, also competing in the 100 meters (11th, 12.09 seconds), the 200 meters (8th, 23.91 seconds), and the long jump (6th, 20 feet, 3.5 inches).
Junior Jason Main was first in the pole vault after clearing the bar at 13 feet, 6 inches. The Rams nearly swept the top three spots in the event. Main’s teammate, senior Juanandres Flores, was second after clearing 13 feet, and fellow Ram Nicholas Rubio was fourth with a height of 10 feet, 6 inches.
Senior Logan Sutton also brought home a first place medal for Del Rio after winning the discus with a throw of 138 feet, 8 inches. Sutton was another multi-event athlete, taking seventh in the 400 meters in 55.29 seconds and eighth in the shot put with a toss of 36 feet, 6 inches.
Aside from the first place finishes, Del Rio reached the podium in several other events as well.
Junior Samuel Curtis was third in the 800 meters in 2:05.23. The Rams’ 800-meter relay team was second in 1:33.38. The 400-meter relay team was third in 43.55 seconds. The 1,600-meter relay team was third in 3:42.81. Sophomore Ethan Dobbins was second in the high jump after clearing the bar at 5 feet, 8 inches. He was also third in the triple jump with a distance of 41 feet. Senior Emmanuel Devonte Reyes was second in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 8 inches. Senior George Avalos was second in the shot put with a toss of 42 feet, 5 inches, and sophomore Damien Guerrero was third in the same event with a toss of 40 feet, 1 inch.
The top six finishers in each event also earned points for their schools that went to the overall team totals. Athletes earning points for Del Rio were as follows:

Noah Maris – 300-meter Hurdles, 4th place, 43.36 seconds
Andres Garcia – 300-meter Hurdles, 6th place, 43.80 seconds
Damien Guerrero – Discus, 4th place, 122 feet, 3 inches
Ignacio Palacios – Discus, 6th place, 117 feet, 9 inches
AJ Salazar – Shot Put, 6th place, 37 feet
