SPORTS — Rams finish second in first track meet

It took a few delays, but the 2021 track and field season at Del Rio High School is underway.

The Rams and Queens returned to action Thursday when Del Rio High School hosted the annual Queen City Relays track and field meet. Six teams took part including host Del Rio, Laredo United, Laredo Alexander, Eagle Pass, Eagle Pass C.C. Winn and Uvalde.

Laredo Alexander won the boys team title with 195 points. Del Rio was second with 124 points.

Schools earned points if their athletes or teams finished in the top six of each event. Del Rio’s results in each event are as follows:

 

3,200-Meter Run

Bobby Moore was Del Rio’s top finisher in the 3,200 meters as he was third in 10:25.35. Mikael Perez was sixth in 10:52.93, and Marco Trujillo was seventh in 10:54.81.

Eagle Pass’ Noah Gonzalez won the event in 10:19.92.

 

400-Meter Relay

Del Rio took second in a time of 45.66. The Rams’ team consisted of Aiden Huerta, Juan Chili Peralta, William Grant and Luis Pablo Galaviz.

Alexander won the event in 44.51 seconds.

 

800 Meters

Joe Chavez was Del Rio’s top finisher in the 800 meters, taking second in 2:04.57.

Jacob Coronado was fourth in 2:05.89, and Perez was seventh in 2:10.32.

Alexander’s Joseph Gonzalez was first in 2:03.14.

 

110-Meter Hurdles

Luis Flores took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 18.29 seconds. Rolando Niño was sixth in 18.86 seconds, and Virgilio De Hoyos was seventh in 20 seconds.

Alexander’s Nathan Jasso won in 16.56 seconds.

 

100 Meters

Grant was the Rams’ top finisher in the 100 meters, taking ninth in 12.59 seconds. Jose Ortiz was 11th in 12.83 seconds, and Mario Jimenez was 15th in 13.14 seconds.

United’s D’Carlo Calderon was first in 11.27 seconds.

 

800-Meter Relay

Del Rio’s team took fifth in the 800 meters in 1:38.27. The team included Huerta, Alan Dobbins, Peralta and Galaviz.

United won the event in 1:36.64.

 

400 Meters

Del Rio’s top finisher in the 400 meters was Nathan Reyes, who was second in 53.69. Miguel Gonzalez was seventh in 56.63, and Arnulfo Ramirez was ninth in 57.34.

Eagle Pass’ Armando De Los Santos won in 51.68 seconds.

 

300-Meter Hurdles

Niño was the Rams’ top finisher in the 300-meter hurdles, taking fifth in 47.04 seconds. Teammate Flores was sixth in 47.47, and De Hoys was eighth in 48.73 seconds.

United’s D’Carlo Calderon won in 38.71 seconds.

 

200 Meters

Zachary Taylor was third in the 200 meters, finishing in 24.97 seconds. Nathan Adame was ninth in 26.20 seconds.

United’s Sebastian Alvarado won the event in 24.50 seconds.

 

1,600 Meters

Del Rio’s Jacob Coronado took second in 4:46.46 followed by teammate Moore in third at 4:47.86. Trujillo was sixth in 4:48.38.

Eagle Pass’ Oscar Ruiz won in 4:40.99.

 

1,600-Meter Relay

Del Rio was fourth in the 1,600-meter relay in 3:44.63. The team consisted of Huerta, Joe Chavez, Galaviz and Ramirez.

Laredo United won the event in 3:33.93.

 

Discus

Del Rio’s Diego Piña won the discus with a throw of 144 feet, 1 inch. Teammate Noe Rodriguez was fourth at 132 feet, 10 inches.

 

High Jump

Alexander’s Damian Flores won the high jump after clearing 5 feet, 6 inches. No Del Rio athlete had a qualified jump.

 

Long Jump

Dylan Casas was Del Rio’s top finisher in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 2.5 inches to take fifth.

Laredo Alexander’s Julian Verastegui won the event with a distance of 21 feet, 4 inches.

 

Pole Vault

Del Rio’s Perry Mcintire won the pole vault after clearing 11 feet. Teammate Cristian Briones tied for third after clearing 10 feet. Tristen Sutton was seventh after clearing 9 feet, 6 inches.

 

Shot Put

Oscar Sandoval III was 10th with a throw of 35 feet, 8.5 inches. Rodriguez was 12th at 32 feet, 9 inches, and Ricky Torres was 14th at 30 feet, 9.5 inches.

Alexander’s Julian Tijerina won the event with a throw of 54 feet, 4.5 inches.

 

Triple Jump

Dobbins was second with a leap of 39 feet, 9.5 inches. Casas was fourth at 39 feet, 7 inches, and Alissandro Sanchez was seventh at 36 feet, 5 inches.

United’s Eric Heard won the event with a throw of 40 feet, 3 inches.
