Despite not having spring football, many of the Del Rio Rams football team’s skill players have been busy this summer with camps and more.
Rams head coach Rod Taylor said the success of the Rams track and field team, especially the 4×200 relay team that featured four members of the Rams football team, was the catalyst for the decision to skip spring football. The absence of spring football does mean the team will begin practice Monday, Aug. 1, and will get to have three scrimmages before kicking off the season at San Antonio Roosevelt the week of Aug. 25.
While many members of the 2022-23 Rams football team have been taking part in strength and conditioning camp at Del Rio High, several others have been traveling to hone their skills at camps held at various colleges.
The first big one for the Rams was the Second Annual Dallas Showcase held at Southern Methodist University. More than 60 universities and colleges were reported to have representatives at the two camps held June 3 and June 4.
“Hopefully we can get some scholarship offers for our kids. If nothing else, the kids will get to experience a different type of environment and maybe open some eyes to possibilities,” Taylor said.
Attending the camp were running back/wide receiver Zane Hughes, wide receiver/kick return specialist Jovahn West, offensive linemen Julio Gamez and Caleb Rodriguez, quarterback Zack Taylor, tight end/linebacker Mitch Melton, wide receiver Alan Dobbins, defensive backs Fabian Venegas and Andrew Villarreal, quarterback/running back Elian De La Paz, and wide receiver/quarterback/punter Corbin Farrar.
Taylor and Dobbins were on the road after the showcase, attending a camp at Florida State University immediately afterwards. They’re scheduled to attend a camp at Texas Tech University this weekend.
Melton attended camp at Louisiana State University and traveled to two other camps as well, Coach Taylor said.
This week, members of the Rams offensive line and defensive line and the team’s 7-on-7 team traveled to Carrizo Springs to take part in events there.
Taylor said the linemen finished second in the offensive/defensive lineman challenge there while the 7-on-7 team went 3-0. The Rams beat Eagle Pass C.C. Winn, 19-0; beat La Pryor, 20-6; and beat Carrizo Springs, 21-13.
Taylor added that defensive back John Chaney had an interception for a touchdown and Zack Taylor did not throw an interception in the three games.
