Del Rio’s Rams basketball team spent the weekend in San Angelo, continuing their non-district tune-ups with a run in the Doug McCutchen Memorial Tournament.

The Rams played four games, going 1-3 against some stiff competition.

“The tournament had some very good competition. It’s good preparation for district,” Rams assistant coach Rudy Elizondo said.

Del Rio opened the tournament against El Paso Eastwood, falling 58-46.

The Rams were in a 32-17 hole at halftime and were down by 20 headed into the fourth quarter before breaking loose for 20 points in the final period to cut the deficit to single digits.

J.J. Cervantes and Nick Rivera led the Rams with 11 points. Jorge Rubio added six points, Alessando Elizondo and Alan Dobbins each had five points, Joel Dominguez and William Proffit each had four points, and Jairo Venegas rounded out the scoring with two points.

Game two for Del Rio pitted them against Lubbock Cooper.

Three Rams scored in double digits as Del Rio picked up a 70-65 win to even their tournament mark at 1-1.

Rivera continued his stellar season, scoring 23 points to pace Del Rio. Freshman Elizondo had 19 points including a trio of 3-pointers. Cervantes continued his steady play, scoring 11 points. Proffit had eight points, Dominguez had seven points, and Dobbins finished with two points.

Del Rio’s final game on Friday found them matched up against Canyon Randall. Canyon jumped out to a 42-29 lead at halftime and never looked back, handing the Rams an 81-58 loss to drop them to 1-2 in the tournament.

Proffit was hitting from long range, dropping in three 3-pointers to score 15 points and lead the Rams in that category. Rivera had 11 points, Elizondo had nine points, Rubio, Cervantes and Dobbins each had six points, Joe Villarreal had three points and Dominguez had two points to round out the scoring.

Saturday the Rams had one final game … against El Paso Parkland.

Del Rio stayed close throughout the game, trailing by just three, 35-32, at halftime. Parkland pushed its lead to six points by the end of the third, and then pulled away in the fourth for a 71-59 win over the Rams.

Four Rams scored in double digits led by Rivera’s 11 points. Dominguez, Proffit and Cervantes also had 10 points each. Elizondo had eight points, Rubio had six points and Dobbins added four points.

Del Rio was scheduled to return to the road Tuesday as they were scheduled to travel to Uvalde to face the Coyotes at 6:30 p.m.

The Rams’ next home game isn’t scheduled until Tuesday, Dec. 14, when they host Carrizo Springs at 7 p.m. at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium.
