Del Rio’s boys soccer team is in a comfortable spot in the district standings as the Rams prepare for their final game of the regular season.
The Rams defeated Laredo United South 2-1 Wednesday to solidify their hold on third place in District 30-6A. Alfain Peñaloza and Robert Garcia each scored a goal for Del Rio, which avenged a 1-0 loss to South earlier this season.
The win, plus the 2-1 outcome, keeps the Rams ahead of South in the district standings. While the two teams split their head-to-head meetings, and each team scored two goals against the other, Del Rio holds the advantage in goal differential over United South, 2 to 0.
Headed into the final game of the 2022 regular season, Del Rio and Laredo Nixon occupy the final two spots in the district standings with United South (4 wins, 3 draws, 4 losses – 17 points) on the outside looking in. Both the Rams (6 wins, 2 draws, 3 losses) and the Mustangs (6 wins, 1 draw, 5 losses) have amassed 20 points, but Nixon’s regular season ended with a 3-1 win over United Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, the Rams still have to face Eagle Pass, which through 11 matches had not earned a point in district play while United South closes its season out against Laredo LBJ, the district leaders who earned a draw against Laredo Alexander Wednesday but lost in the shootout.
Del Rio and Nixon split their district meetings with each team winning 2-1, but Del Rio has the edge in goal differential overall.
The Rams close out their regular season Friday at 6:30 p.m. in front of the home fans at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium against Eagle Pass.
