Del Rio High’s football schedule will see the Rams face some new opponents including a pair of teams for the first time in school history.

Rams head coach Rod Taylor released a tentative schedule for the 2022-23 season following Thursday morning’s announcement of the biennial UIL realignment. Del Rio will remain in District 30-6A, along with Eagle Pass High, Laredo Alexander, Laredo LBJ, Laredo United and Laredo United South, but the six-team district means the Rams will have five non-district games and only two district home games for the upcoming season.

The only parts of the schedule being finalized are the days, times and locations for the games. All of Del Rio’s home games will be played at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium, but Taylor said he was still waiting to hear on where some of the out of town games will be played.

The Rams will begin play week one, which takes places the week of Aug. 25.

“The schedule is about 90 percent complete,” Taylor said. “We were scheduled to play Holmes and Southwest Legacy, but then they each got moved to nine-team districts so that changed things.”

Del Rio’s tentative schedule is as follows:

Week One – at San Antonio Roosevelt

Week Two – home against San Antonio Warren

Week Three – home against Leander

Week Four – home against San Antonio East Central

Week Five – at Midland Christian

Week Six – Bye Week

Week Seven – at Laredo LBJ (Laredo’s Student Activity Complex)

Week Eight – home against Laredo United South

Week Nine – at Laredo United (Laredo’s SAC)

Week 10 – at Laredo Alexander (Laredo’s SAC)

Week 11 – home against Eagle Pass

Leander and Midland Christian will be first time opponents for Del Rio. The Rams have previously played Roosevelt, Warren and East Central.

San Felipe Del Rio CISD Athletic Director Frenchey McCrea Jr. gave credit to Taylor for his work Thursday morning to find opponents in the wake of realignment. He said Del Rio’s remote location made it difficult for some teams, but the Rams coaches were ready for any and all changes.

“There were a least three to four different plans. Coach Taylor did a good job locking in as many teams as he could do in preliminary discussions. Once realignment was announced, Taylor was on the phone and I was on the phone and on Google Docs trying to set up games,” McCrea said. “It wasn’t as hard for us as some of those other schools have it. There are still teams out there looking for teams to play. It’s tough. For us, it’s hard to find opponents who want to come this way. We’re always open to teams that want to travel. In a lot of those cases, like with Leander, there’s some kind of coaching connection that gets you to those areas.”

According to UIL, the 2022-23 football season is tentatively scheduled to begin Aug. 1 with the first day of conditioning, but only for schools that don’t have spring football. Schools that do have spring football will begin Aug. 8.
