Del Rio High’s soccer teams kicked off their district schedules with wins Friday night.

The Rams traveled to Laredo and earned a 1-0 decision over the Laredo LBJ Wolves. According to reports, there was a two-hour delay to the start of the match, putting the Rams on the pitch at 9:30 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m.

Despite the delay, Del Rio scored the contest’s lone goal in the first half when Ely Losoya took control of a ball that caromed off an LBJ defender from a Sergio Cedillo shot and buried it in the back of the net.

In the second half, Del Rio was left with just 10 players when one of the Rams was sent off. Down a man, Del Rio’s defense rallied to keep LBJ out of the net thanks to the efforts of players like Antonio Pineda, Saul Sanchez, Hector Trujillo, Anthony Cadena, Jose Vilema and Danny Cedillo, according to the official Rams soccer booster Facebook page.

Back home in Del Rio, the Queens soccer team opened district play in front of the home fans at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium with a convincing 6-0 win over Laredo LBJ.

Kaylee Hernandez and Noelie Ibarra each scored a pair of goals while Alondra Sanchez and Layla Mendez each scored once, according to the official Queens Soccer Booster Club’s Facebook page.

According to Del Rio Queens head coach Wilber Rivas, the Queens have been battling injuries throughout their non-district schedule and are hoping to be at 100 percent when the true playoff push begins later in the season.

The Rams are at home Tuesday night to face the Laredo United South Panthers. Junior varsity will play at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity squad at 6:30 p.m.

The Queens get an extra day of rest Tuesday but travel to Laredo’s Krueger Field Wednesday for a match against United South. Sub-varsity plays at 6 p.m. while varsity is scheduled to play at 7:30 p.m. The Queens’ next home match will be Saturday when they host Laredo United at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium at 11 a.m. for sub-varsity and 12:30 p.m. for varsity.
