Del Rio won’t be represented at this year’s state track and field meet, but the Rams’ record-setting 800-meter relay team rewrote their school’s record book again.
Coming into this past weekend’s Class 6A, Region IV Track and Field Meet at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio, all eyes were on Del Rio’s 4×200 relay team of sophomore Zack Taylor, freshman Zane Hughes, junior Juan Peralta and junior Jovahn West. The Queen City speedsters had already broken Del Rio High School’s school record in the event with a 1:27.93 in San Angelo in March, and had one of the top 10 fastest times in the region headed into the Region IV meet.
In the preliminaries Friday, the team ran a 1:28.71, its fourth fastest time of the season. It sent them to Saturday’s finals where only the top two teams would advance to State.
Del Rio finished third, but set a new school record with a 1:27.25. They finished behind Converse Judson, who won in 1:26.12; and San Antonio Reagan, who was second in 1:26.96.
The good news for the Rams is all four members of the 4×200 will be back next year.
Del Rio sent more than a dozen athletes to the regional meet, but some were unable to make it out of the preliminaries.
Hughes finished 10th in the preliminaries for the 100 meters in 11.07 seconds. On the girls side, Ariana Erickson was 10th in the preliminaries in 12.43 seconds, and teammate Myla Tabora was 12th in the prelims in 12.51 seconds.
In the 200 meters, Taylor finished sixth overall in 22.34 seconds. Erickson was 12th in the prelims in 26.00 in the girls race.
Nathan Reyes was 13th in the preliminaries of the 400 meters in 51.47 seconds.
Kimberly Gloria finished 13th in the 1,600 meters in 5:27.90. She was also 11th in the 3,200 meters in 11:54.79.
The 4×400 relay team of Luis Pablo Galaviz, Jairo Venegas, Taylor and Reyes was 15th in the preliminaries in 3:33.24.
In the discus, Noe Rodriguez was 10th with a throw of 152 feet, 4 inches. Teammate Diego Piña was 15th at 107 feet, 8 inches.
Venegas tied for 12th in the high jump after clearing 5 feet, 10 inches.
In the pole vault, Devin Barrera took seventh, clearing the bar at 13 feet, 6 inches.
