Del Rio sent six of its athletes to the boys powerlifting state championship and earned a pair of top 10 finishes.
Six Rams competed in six different weight classes at the recent Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s Class 6A, Division I State Championship in Abilene in March.
Joaquinn Fuentes was the team’s top finisher, taking seventh in the 275-pound weight class. Fuentes lifted a total weight of 1,715 pounds including a 720-pound squat, a 415-pound bench press and a 580-pound deadlift. Fuentes was the Region I, Division I champion in his weight class with a total weight lifted of 1,760 pounds.
George Avalos was eighth in the 242-pound weight class. His total weight lifted was 1,720 pounds. That included a 735-pound squat, 415-pound bench press and a 570-pound deadlift. He was ranked second at the Region I, Division I meet after lifting a total of 1,800 pounds.
Tadeo Talavera was 13th in the 123-pound weight class. He lifted a total weight of 1,035 pounds including a 455-pound squat, a 245-pound bench press and a 335-pound deadlift. Talavera was third in the 123-pound weight class at the Region I, Division I meet.
Jordan Castaneda was 33rd in the 220-pound weight class with a total weight lifted of 1,440 pounds. He posted a 535-pound squat, a 395-pound bench press and a 510-pound deadlift.
Also competing at the state meet were Tristan Coronado in the 165-pound weight class and Luis Rodriguez in the 198-pound weight class. Coronado and Rodriguez were both third at the regional meet in their respective weight classes.
