It was a rough way to wrap up a season.
The Del Rio Rams baseball team was held to one hit and committed six errors in the season finale for the squad as they suffered an 8-0 loss at the hands of the Eagle Pass Eagles Wednesday in Eagle Pass.
Del Rio ends the season 7-14 overall and 4-8 in District 30-6A.
Eagle Pass scored twice in the second inning to open up the scoring in the game. The big blow came in the fourth inning as the Eagles struck for five runs to blow the game wide open.
Eagle Pass starter Edward Mendoza pitched a gem for the Eagles. He allowed only one hit and struck out 11 in seven innings of work. He retired the first 19 batters he faced in order before giving up a one-out single to Matt Mendez in the top of the seventh. He then retired the next two batters he faced to close out of the game.
Wednesday’s game was initially set for Tuesday, but the threat of inclement weather forced its postponement for one day.
Laredo United South ends the regular season as the district champions with a 10-2 record. They also won the title in 2019. No title was awarded in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Alexander and Eagle Pass each finished the regular season 9-3 and will play each other Friday to determine the district’s No. 2 seed. In their previous two meetings, each team beat the other at home. The Eagles won in Eagle Pass, 9-1, but the Bulldogs got the win in Laredo, 6-5.
Laredo United is the district’s fourth seed at 6-6.
