Del Rio’s Rams soccer team is headed to the postseason.
The Rams secured their spot with an 11-1 win over Eagle Pass Friday in the final regular season game of 2022 and the final home game.
Del Rio clinched the third seed in 30-6A with 23 points after finishing the season with seven wins, two draws and three losses (3 points per win, 1 point per draw, 2 points for winning a shootout in a draw).
Laredo LBJ won the district title with 25 points. The Wolves finished the regular season with a 3-1 loss to Laredo United South. Despite finishing with 20 points, the same as Laredo Nixon, it’s the Mustangs that advances to the playoffs as the fourth seed due to the district’s tiebreakers.
Laredo Alexander finishes second in the district with 24 points. The Bulldogs missed a chance to win the district championship by losing to Laredo United 2-1 in the final regular season match for both teams.
Alfain Peñaloza continued his hot streak, scoring a pair of goals in Del Rio’s win over Eagle Pass. He’s scored at least one goal in three straight matches. He also assisted on Raymundo Rivera’s goal.
Robert Garcia had a big game for the Rams as well, notching three goals and an assist. Hector Trujillo also had a hat trick with three goals and had an assist. Demian Fernandez and Antonio Rodriguez scored Del Rio’s other goals while Fernandez, Cesar Piña, Ely Losoya and Esteban Sauceda contributed with assists.
Friday’s home match also honored Rams seniors Angel Espinoza, Julian Rivera, Roberto Garza, Marcos Garcia, Raymundo Rivera, Demian Fernandez, Ivan Serrano and Robert Garcia.
While no date or location for the Rams’ Bi-District round playoff match have been announced yet, Del Rio will face District 29-6A runner-up O’Connor Panthers. O’Connor finished 14-4-3 overall and 12-2-2 in district play. They’re unbeaten in their last five matches, which includes four wins and a draw.
