This week it was the Del Rio Rams’ basketball team’s turn to travel to San Antonio to compete at the Harlandale Tournament.
The Rams were one of 13 teams to compete in the tournament. Del Rio was placed in Pool D alongside John Jay, Judson and San Antonio Memorial. Other teams competing included Harlandale, Kerrville Tivy, Highlands, McCollum, YMLA, Central, South San, Flour Bluff and Burbank.
Del Rio opened pool play Thursday with a pair of games, splitting the two contests.
The Rams opened the tournament against Memorial, picking up a 67-45 win.
It was a close game early on with Del Rio leading 17-15 after the first quarter thanks to a barrage of 3-pointers. Three different Rams hit from long range to stake Del Rio to the early lead.
The lead grew to 32-23 by halftime as the Rams held Memorial to just eight points in the second quarter.
Del Rio came alive in the third quarter, dropping 25 points in the period to solidify its lead. Seven different Rams scored in the third led by Alessandro Elizondo and Jorge Rubio’s six points each.
All 11 players on the Rams roster scored in the win. Elizondo led the team with 15 points, Nick Rivera had nine points, Rubio finished with eight points, J.J. Cervantez had seven points, Jairo Venegas and Alan Dobbins, in his Rams debut, each had six points, Damian Espinoza had five points, William Proffit had three points, and Joel Dominguez, Manuel Rodriguez and Joe Villarreal each had two points.
Del Rio’s second game Thursday pitted them against Judson. The Rockets scored at least 20 points in each quarter and handed the Rams a 97-77 loss.
The Rams trailed by five after the first quarter, 23-18, but the deficit grew to double digits by halftime, 49-34.
Rivera led the Rams with 17 points. Elizondo had 13 points, Rubio and Cervantez each had 12 points, Dobbins had 10 points, Proffit had eight points, and Dominguez had two points.
Del Rio is scheduled to play San Antonio Burbank Friday morning.
The Rams and the Rockets won’t have too long to wait for a rematch. Del Rio and Judson are scheduled to meet again Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium.
