Nothing like a little hometown love to get some momentum early in the season.
After dropping its first nine games of the 2022 season, the Rams basketball has now won two in a row. The most recent victory came Tuesday night in front of the faithful fans clad in blue and white at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium when the Rams downed the Uvalde Coyotes, 73-49.
Del Rio got off to a fast start, scoring 18 points in the first and second quarters to build a 36-20 lead by halftime. The Rams hit six points in the first half including four by Joe Villarreal. Three of Villarreal’s long-range shots came in the first quarter alone.
Uvalde managed to outscore the Rams in the third quarter, 14-11, but the Rams answered with a 26-point fourth quarter to seal the win.
Alessandro Elizondo led Del Rio with 19 points including four 3-pointers. He was one of four Rams to score in double digits. Joining him were Alan Dobbins, who had 15 points; Villarreal, who finished with 12 points; and Joel Dominguez, who had 10 points.
Brandon Ker added seven points, Jorge Rubio had four points, and Corbin Farrar, Jayden Rivera and Nick Hernandez each had two points for Del Rio.
Uvalde’s Joseph Flores led all scorers with 20 points in the loss.
Del Rio is scheduled to travel to San Antonio Saturday to face East Central at 1 p.m.
The Rams won’t play on their home court again Friday, Jan. 13, when they open play in District 30-6A against Laredo United in a 7 p.m. meeting.
