Del Rio’s powerlifting season is off and running and it seems that the ladies are picking up right where they left off last year.

The team finished third in the girls varsity division at the Carrizo Springs Wildcat Invitational Powerlifting Meet Saturday, but five of the girls hit their regional qualifying total meaning their path to state has already reached its first mark.

Gabby Diaz led the way for Del Rio. She took first in the 144-pound class with a total weight lifted of 970 pounds. She’s currently ranked first in the region and is coming off a season in which she finished second at state, missing out on a state title by just 35 pounds.

Her showing at Carrizo Springs should worry her fellow competitors. She’s already bested her squat total from state (405 at Carrizo, up 50 pounds from state), her bench press total has increased (210 at Carrizo, up 25 pounds from state) and a 55-pound increase in her deadlift (300 at state, 355 at Carrizo). Overall, her first meet back saw a 130-pound increase in her total weight lifted.

Her performance at Carrizo Spring also earned her the title of Best “Pound for Pound” Lifter of the Meet.

Leslie Paredes also brought back a first place finish, taking top honors in the 181-pound weight class. She lifted a total of 835 pounds (375 squat, 180 bench press and 280 in the deadlift) and also hit her regional qualifying total.

Aniah Gonzalez reached her regional qualifying total with a weight of 710 pounds lifted. She placed second in the 97-pound weight class.

Leijla Lomas also reached her regional qualifying total with 690 pounds lifted, good enough for second place in the 123-pound weight class.

Anaid Diaz was fourth in the 123-pound weight class with 680 pounds lifted, but she also hit her regional qualifying total to round out the group.

Also competing for the varsity girls were Sophia Cervantez (2nd place, 132 pound division, 620 pounds total), Jasmine Crutcher (2nd place, 220 pound division, 560 pounds total), Ember Matherne (3rd place, 148 pound division, 600 pounds total), Miranda Padilla (4th place, 148 pound division, 440 pounds total), Olivia Taylor (4th place, 132 pound division, 530 pounds total), Elma Ramirez (4th place, 198 pound division, 745 pounds total), Zoelet Moran (5th place, 97 pound division, 305 pounds total), Raylin Cedillo (5th place, 114 pound division, 540 pounds total) and Aneela Bly (5th place, 242+ pound division, 560 pounds total).
