SPORTS — Rams take second at Area track and field meet

For many of Del Rio High’s track and field athletes, their season has come to an end. But for several others, it’s on to regionals.

Del Rio competed in the Class 6A, Region IV Area 29-30 meet Wednesday at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio and advanced more than a dozen athletes to the next round of competition.

As a team, Del Rio’s boys finished second while the girls team finished sixth. San Antonio Harlan took first in both divisions as a team.

The top four finishers in each event advanced to the Class 6A, Region IV Meet April 29 and 30 at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio.

Del Rio’s boys team will be represented at the regional meet in several different events, and leading the way will be sophomore Zach Taylor.

Taylor won a pair of Area championships. He won the 200 meters in 22.73 seconds and joined teammates freshman Zane Hughes, junior Juan Peralta and junior Jovahn West in winning the 4 x 200-meter relay in 1:28.49. He was also part of the 4 x 400-meter relay team that finished second in 3:25.60 along with senior Luis Pablo Galaviz, senior Jairo Venegas and senior Nathan Reyes.

Senior Devin Barrera was also an Area champion, winning the pole vault after clearing a personal best height of 13 feet, 9 inches.

Reyes is another Del Rio athlete who will compete in multiple events at the regional meet after he finished second in the 400 meters in 49.71 seconds. He missed out on an Area championship by .30 seconds to Cerrone Thompson of Harlan.

Hughes will also compete in multiple events at regionals, as he was third in the 100 meters in 10.94 seconds.

Venegas will also get two shots to advance to state at the regional meet, as he was fourth in the high jump after clearing 5 feet, 9 inches.

Sophomore Noe Rodriguez advanced by taking second in the discus with a throw of 153 feet, 7 inches. He will be joined by teammate senior Diego Piña who took third at 145 feet, 2 inches.

Earning points for the boys team at the Area meet was Galaviz, who took sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 41.98 seconds; sophomore Alan Dobbins, who was sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 39 feet, 11 inches; and the 4 x 100-meter relay team of Peralta, West, junior Nathan Adame and Hughes, which finished fifth in 43.48 seconds.

Adame also finished seventh in the 400 meters in 52.79; and West was eighth in the 100 meters in 11.46 seconds.

For Del Rio’s girls, three of them are advancing to the regional meet.

Sophomore Ariana Erickson is one two Queens who qualified in two events. She won the 100 meters in 12.29 seconds. She was also second in the 200 meters in 26.11 seconds, just .01 seconds off the winning time posted by Sanai Thornton of San Antonio Brennan.

Also qualifying in two events is junior Kimberly Gloria. Gloria won the 1,600 meters in 5:28.26 and was second in the 3,200 meters in 11:57.25.

Junior Myla Tabora is also headed to the regional meet after finishing fourth in the 100 meters in 12.44 seconds.

Also competing for the Queens at the Area meet were the 400-meter relay team of Tabora, Erickson, senior Sydney Ballard and junior Marina Jimenez, which was sixth in 50.53 seconds; and sophomore Emily Torres, who was eighth in the 300-meter hurdles in 49.38 seconds.
