A member of the Del Rio Rams football team has a chance to be named to one of the most prestigious lists in Texas high school football.
Sophomore quarterback Zack Taylor is one of 300 players from across the state to vie for a spot on the 2021 Whataburger Super Team. According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine, Taylor was one of 3,000 players nominated by fans through texasfootball.com. He is now one of 300 players looking to earn a spot on the list of 40 honorees.
“The amount of hard work and dedication these young players put into their sport is inspiring,” said Jeff Altman, Director of Sponsorships at Whataburger. “Getting to celebrate and support these standout players is one of our great privileges—right up there with feeding and fueling our sports fans across Texas and beyond.”
Fans can visit https://www.texasfootball.com/static-page/form/?url=whataburger-super-team and cast their votes for Taylor or whichever other standout athletes they feel should make the cut. For the ballot to count, voters must select one player from each of the following categories: DB (defensive back), DL (defensive line), OL (offensive line), LB (linebacker), WR/TE (wide receiver/tight end), RB (running back), QB (quarterback), K (kicker) and P (punter).
Taylor is one of 40 candidates under the quarterback position.
Voting ends Dec. 31.
Taylor just completed his first season as the Rams’ starting quarterback. He was named the District 30-6A Offensive Newcomer of the Year to cap a season in which he helped lead the Rams to the playoffs for the second consecutive year. For the season, Taylor threw for 12 touchdowns and rushed for 11 more. He had three touchdowns runs of 98 yards or more during the season, becoming the only player in the state to accomplish the feat more than once in 2021. He also had a 75-yard touchdown run against San Antonio Veterans Memorial in Del Rio’s season opener.
Taylor was also nominated for the Mr. Texas Football Player of the Week Award after Del Rio’s win over Laredo Nixon Oct. 15. In that game Taylor amassed 458 yards of total offense including 275 yards rushing and 183 yards passing. He also accounted for six touchdowns – three rushing, three passing – in the win.
Taylor is the son of Del Rio Rams head football coach Roderick Taylor.
