The Del Rio Rams basketball team continued a strong start to its season by making it out of pool play at the Harlandale tournament.
Del Rio moved out of pool play after beating San Antonio Burbank, 97-69, Friday.
A 52-point first half propelled the Rams to the win, spurred on by 15 first-half points by eventual all-tournament selection Nick Rivera.
It was Del Rio’s inside game that helped the Rams take control. Del Rio had 32 free throws attempts, but made only 11 of those tries.
Rivera would finish the game with 29 points. Alessandro Elizondo had 17 points, J.J. Cervantes had 14 points, William Proffit had 13 points, Joel Dominguez and Jorge Rubio each had eight points, Alan Dobbins had six points, and Jairo Venegas had two points.
When bracket play began, the Rams faced off against host Harlandale.
Harlandale grabbed a 15-8 lead in the first quarter but Del Rio dropped 23 points in the second quarter to cut the lead to five, 36-31, by halftime.
The Rams cut the lead to four headed into the fourth quarter, but Harlandale outscored Del Rio by 10 points in the final period to hand the Rams a 78-64 loss and eliminate Del Rio from the tournament.
Rivera led Del Rio with 23 points. Cervantes finished with 12 points, Elizondo had nine points, Proffit had eight points, Dobbins had five points, Rubio had four points and Dominguez finished with three points.
Rivera was named to the all-tournament team for his efforts.
Del Rio was scheduled to face off against Harlandale again on Monday at 1:30 p.m. The Rams’ next home game is scheduled for Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. against Judson at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium.
