SPORTS — Swimmers advance to regionals

LAREDO – The Del Rio swim team fared well at the District 30-6A Swimming and Diving Championships held in Laredo at the Carroll E. Summers Jr, UISD Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon. 

Twelve Del Rio swimmers earned a regional berth that will be held on February 9th and 10th at the same facility in Laredo. The Region VIII Swimming and Diving Championships will bring the best swimmers from south Texas, battling for a state berth.

In the team standings the Rams placed fourth overall with 44 points while the Queens came in fifth with 33 points. Laredo United won the boys’ team title while the girls title went to Laredo Alexander. 

Del Rio did well in the relays as all three advanced to the regional meet. The highest finish by the Del Rio swimmers came in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay who placed third overall. The team consists of Christopher Vega, Gerardo Camacho, Owen Southam and Alex Pina. 

Two Del Rio swimmers advanced in individual events. Pina took sixth place in the 100-yard freestyle as he hit a 56.65. Meanwhile, Gabriel Gallegos was sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:14.15.

The 200-yard Medley Relay team of Alexa Munoz, Amanda Ong, Carolina Stell and Kalissa Sanchez with a 2:36.98 placed fourth overall. 

The Rams 200-yard Medley Relay team that consisted of Vega, Gallegos, Southam and Pina also came in fourth place and were clocked at 2:00.24. 

The 200-yard Freestyle Relay team placed fifth and the team had familiar faces in Ong, Sanchez, Stell mixed in with Victoria Franco. They finished with a time of 2:08.71.

The boys came in fifth with the 200-yard Freestyle Relay team of Camacho, Southam, Gallegos and Raul Torres. The Rams were clocked at 1:42.74. 

In the final event of the meet, the Queens 400-yard Freestyle Relay team finished in fourth place. The team was comprised of Ariana Morales, Munoz, Sanchez, and Franco.
