The future looks bright for the Del Rio High School tennis team.

When the coaches of the program handed out its end of year awards for the 2020-21 season, all but one award winner was an underclassman. The group included two freshmen, a sophomore and six juniors and a senior. From that group, three were regional tennis tournament qualifiers.

And even though there were no sub-varsity tennis teams this season, both at the high school and middle school level, hopes are high that the incoming group of players next season will only add to the talent of Del Rio’s tennis program and set the stage for both the boys and girls teams to challenge for a district crown in 2021-22. Del Rio’s girls will be the defending spring district champions come next season.

Freshman Andrea Favela was named the girls’ Most Valuable Player after an undefeated singles season and a District 30-6A Girls Singles championship in the spring. Though she has been compared to former Queens tennis standout Angela Vargas, Favela has shown she may be ahead of Vargas at this point in her career and hasn’t even scratched her best.

On the boys’ side, junior William Proffit was named the Most Valuable Player. Proffit was a multi-sport athlete, playing basketball in between the fall and spring tennis seasons. A standout athlete, Proffit just missed a spot in the regional tournament and should challenge for the boys’ district title next season. He was also named the tennis team’s Most Improved boy and was the winner of the Academic Achievement Award.

Twins Reagan and Kennedy Treviño, both juniors, were named Most Improved. The sisters were district champions in girls doubles this spring and will be back to defend their crowns next season.

Freshman Alejandra Solar was named the Queens’ Newcomer of the Year. Like Favela, Solar had an outstanding season in girls singles and was a regional alternate after finishing third in the spring tennis tournament. She lost only one match at the district tournament, to the eventual district runner-up.

Sophomore Albert Flores was named the Rams’ Newcomer of the Year. An all-district honorable mention after the fall season, Flores was the No. 3 player on the boys’ side entering spring play but stayed near the top throughout the year.

Senior Lexi Esquivel and junior Ricardo Mejia were presented with the Fighting Heart Award. Both were standouts in both singles and doubles play throughout the season.
