Roberto Zavala Jr. certainly lived up to his nickname in his second professional fight.
Fighting as part of the undercard of the Jermell Charlo/Brian Castaño title fight at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Del Rio’s Zavala, whose nickname is “Heavy Artillery” as an homage to his service as an artilleryman in the US Army and because of the power he delivers his punches with, knocked his opponent Levi West through the ropes with a thunderous right hook that also sent Zavala to the canvas due to the force he put behind the blow.
The punch resulted in a win by knockout for the 33-year-old railroad worker and ups his professional record to 2-0. Zavala made his professional debut in Galveston in June after three amateur fights.
In a video posted to Instagram by ESPN Deportes’ Chava Rodriguez, who was seated ringside, Zavala is shown stalking West before the two start trading punches in the fourth and final round of their fight. West is backpedaling towards his corner when Zavala unleashes a vicious right hook that sends West skipping under the bottom rope and Zavala down to one knee as he tries to regain his balance.
The punch brought a chorus of “ooohs” and applause from the crowd that was filling up the arena. Two voices can be heard on the video discussing the fight and an audible, “Wow,” can be heard as the clip ends.
West, who was making his pro boxing debut after a short career as a mixed martial arts fighter, was quickly attended to by his corner but the fight was over.
Zavala was fighting out of the No Quit Boxing Gym in Del Rio.
