Street paving, planned construction of a detention pond in a south Del Rio park and ongoing efforts to locate a drill site for a planned water well were among the projects city council members heard about during a recent update from the interim city manager.

Interim City Manager Manuel Chavez spoke about the ongoing projects during the council’s most recent meeting on Tuesday, May 14.

Chavez told the council, “In today’s update, I want to talk about the current street paving. The streets crew completed work at Pafford Street, and with this completion, the next project that they’re going to be working on, in preparation for our Fourth of July celebration, (is) the parking lot next to the Joe Ramos Center, and that parking lot will be utilized as part of the Fourth of July celebration.

“We will come back to city council at our next meeting with an update on the Fourth of July (activities),” Chavez added.

“The next project, one city council had approved, is the detention pond at Carranza Park. Bids have been received, and we are reviewing (the bids) and a possible recommendation to bring back city council to award,” Chavez said.

He also spoke about ongoing efforts by the city to find an alternate water source.

“The next update is regarding our water. I want to remind everyone that we are still under Stage 2 (drought contingency restrictions), and as we continue to remind everyone that we are looking at our water levels, and we continue to monitor those. We are still not into the summer months, so we want to make sure that everybody is aware to monitor and for everyone’s awareness, we are still at Stage 2,” Chavez said.

“With that, at the last council meeting, the city council authorized us to move on an alternate water source. We mentioned that we are planning to do an ERT (electric resistivity tomography) study at the archery range site. Just as an update, staff has been clearing the area, and we’re looking at starting the ERT study next week,” the interim city manager added.

Chavez next spoke about the Del Rio-Acuña Manufacturing Expo held Tuesday and Wednesday at the Del Rio Civic Center.

“We’re also looking at doing our 2nd Annual Miss Fourth of July Pageant, and I want to thank Ms. Esme Meza for organizing this pageant. When we had discussed this last and I said, what if we were to do a Miss Fourth of July Pageant, she already had the agenda ready, so this is something that she really likes to do, so thank you, Esme, and for all those involved. Currently we’re still accepting applications. For more information, please visit our city of Del Rio social media,” Chavez said.

“The last thing, I want to remind everyone that our community services division is putting on a ‘movies in the park’ event. That event is scheduled for May 25 at 8 p.m. This will be located at the pocket park, 614 S. Main St. and the movie that will be shown at this event is Disney/Pixar’s ‘Elemental,’ Chavez finished.
