Southwest Texas College’s Del Rio campus will hold its first ever Del Rio graduation when 238 local students walk across the stage at Del Rio’s Civic Center Tuesday afternoon.
The school, formerly known as Southwest Texas Junior College, officially changed its name to Southwest Texas College in 2023.
The name change was approved by the college’s board on April 20, 2023, as part of a strategic effort to reposition the school as a community college with future plans to offer bachelor’s degrees.
The fact that they are holding their very first and largest graduation ever in Del Rio could be proof the plan is working, as the institution moves toward issuing four-year degrees in the near future.
College officials said they received 238 applications for December graduation, along with 37 students from the summer term who wanted to participate, bringing the total number of graduates walking in Del Rio to 275.
“It has been really special; we have had some students who came to us and asked to walk in
December,” said Connie W. Buchanan, SWTX’s Vice President of the Del Rio Campus. “They
wanted to be able to receive their diploma and walk in front of their family, in their home town.
There was no way we could stand in the way of that.”
Buchanan said the spring graduation will continue to be in Uvalde in the Spring. The 4 p.m.
ceremony will celebrate 126 Liberal Arts graduates and a reception for graduates and their
families will follow in the Red Oak Room.
The 7 p.m. ceremony will honor 113 Applied Science graduates, with arrivals beginning at 6
p.m. A second reception will again follow in the Red Oak Room.
The 37 summer graduates who opted to walk will be incorporated into both ceremonies,
depending on the major.
Buchanan said they expect about 600 people at each ceremony Tuesday.
The SWTC Del Rio Campus can be found at 207 Wildcat Drive. The College also offers
classes in Uvalde, Eagle Pass, Crystal City, Pearsall and Hondo sites.
