Information provided by Texas Comptroller’s Office
Texas shoppers can save money during the state’s annual Sales Tax Holiday, scheduled for Friday, Aug. 8, through Sunday, Aug. 10, 2025.
Most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100 will be exempt from state and local sales tax. The exemption applies to purchases made in-store, online, by mail, phone, or layaway if the transaction is completed during the holiday. Shipping and handling costs count toward the $100 item limit.
Qualifying items include:
-
School supplies such as calculators, lunch boxes, pens, pencils, and notebooks
-
Backpacks for elementary and secondary students
-
Most clothing and shoes, excluding specialty athletic gear
-
Cloth and disposable fabric face masks
Items not exempt:
-
Sports-specific protective gear (football pads, helmets, golf shoes)
-
Accessories, jewelry, handbags, luggage
-
Computers, textbooks, sewing fabrics
-
Business purchases
If tax is charged in error, customers may request a refund from the retailer or file Texas Comptroller Form 00-985 for reimbursement.
The Texas Comptroller estimates shoppers save about $8 for every $100 spent during the holiday. For complete lists of eligible and excluded items, visit comptroller.texas.gov.
