On April 12, 2026, at approximately 7:28 a.m., officers with the Del Rio Police Department responded to the 900 block of East 10th Street
regarding a vehicle alarm.
Upon arrival, officers located a white GMC Sierra 2500 in a carport with the alarm actively sounding. While attempting to contact residents, officers observed the front door open and, after announcing their presence multiple times with no response, made entry to conduct a welfare check.
Inside the residence, officers encountered a male subject, later identified as Eric Anthony Castillo who pointed a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking one officer in the upper thigh. The officer returned fire, and the suspect retreated and barricaded himself inside the residence.
Additional officers responded and secured the scene. The suspect later exited the residence, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
The injured officer was transported to Val Verde Regional Medical Center and is in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. Castillo was transported to the Del Rio Police Department for booking and processing.
Castillo has been charged with three counts of Deadly Conduct – Discharge of a Firearm, one count of Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant, and one count of Attempted Capital Murder of a Peace Officer.
