NEWS — County says no new horses at fairgrounds

Statement from Commissioner Kerr Wardlaw, Precinct 1 Commissioner Kerr Wardlaw, Precinct 1, would like to inform our residents that due to the recent Equine Herpesvirus (EHV) outbreak, the Val Verde County Fairgrounds will not be allowing any new horses onto the property until further notice.
📌 If you remove your horse from the fairgrounds, it will NOT be permitted to return until the outbreak has fully cleared. These precautions are in place to protect the health of all horses on site and to help prevent further spread of the virus.
🐴 What is EHV?
Equine Herpesvirus (EHV) is a contagious virus that affects horses and can spread quickly through:
* Direct horse-to-horse contact
* Contaminated equipment, feed, or water
* Clothing, hands, or surfaces that have come into contact with infected horses
EHV can cause fever, respiratory illness, neurological symptoms, and in severe cases, can be life-threatening.
💡 How You Can Help:
* Limit horse movement and avoid unnecessary travel.
* Do not share equipment, tools, or tack between animals.
* Wash hands and disinfect surfaces regularly.
* Monitor your horse closely for any signs of illness.
* Contact your veterinarian immediately if symptoms appear.
We understand these restrictions may be challenging, but they are necessary to protect our equine community. Thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and dedication to keeping our county safe.
Please stay alert, stay informed, and follow updates from official county channels.
