Del Rio set another record for all-time high temperature on Wednesday, the second record in two days.
According to the National Weather Service’s Del Rio climate summary for Wednesday, a record high temperature of 115 degrees Fahrenheit was recorded at 3:02 p.m.
The 115-degree mark broke both the 105-degree high that had been recorded for June 21 in 1951 and 1996 and the all-time high temperature of 113 degrees Fahrenheit Del Rio recorded on Tuesday.
Del Rio remains under a heat advisory until 1 p.m. Friday and an excessive heat warning from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday. Temperatures on Friday are again expected to reach near 110 degrees, with “heat index values as high as 115,” the National Weather Service warned.
The NWS forecasts temperature are expected to stay high throughout the weekend and deep into next week, with daytime highs hovering between 105 and 110 degrees.
Local meteorologist Dan Schreiber ascribed the heat wave “to a persistent high-pressure system centered over southwest Texas.”
City officials on Wednesday announced the city’s transportation depot, 101 W. Ogden St., would be opened as a cooling shelter from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday until further notice.
The city announced the opening of the cooling shelter on its Facebook page and noted, “Hours of operation (for the cooling center) will be reassessed based on temperatures and usage, as needed.”
