City Manager John Sheedy gave city council members an update on a variety of city projects during the Oct. 24 regular council meeting.

Sheedy routinely briefs the council on ongoing city projects during the “city manager’s informational update” portion of each meeting.

“We’re preparing to put up our city Christmas decorations. Crews have already been out preparing the areas so we can get an early start on our Christmas lighting around town,” Sheedy told the council.

“At the Field of Our Dreams, the bleachers and press boxes are being installed. The next step is we have to get electricity to the boxes, but those are coming along well,” he said.

“On Jap Lowe, we’ve had an internal meeting with city staff to talk about the streets, and we’ve met with some of the Jap Lowe residents. Council is aware that we were going to set up a meeting (with residents), but we did have a discussion with staff and so we will be setting up the meeting we spoke about at the last council meeting so that staff and the council members that had requested will attend that. I’ve already spoken to a representative from Jap Lowe, and we going to possibly try and do that next week, so that meeting is on track.

“We met our new TxDOT engineer today. The mayor and our assistant city manager, our public works director and our EDC director met him. We want to welcome him to Del Rio. We had a very productive meeting with him and we think he’s really going to represent well for us here in Del Rio,” Sheedy said.

The city manager also said demolition work has begun on the new City Hall at 801 South Main St., with asbestos abatement work in progress there.

“We have a strategic planning meeting later this week. We’re going to be working with staff, department and division heads. We’re going to have a joint session with staff and council. So the strategic planning session, we’re very excited to be able to spend some time with our council and our department and division heads and see if we can kind of plan things and communicate things a little bit better on things that are going on,” Sheedy said.

“I want to thank Ms. Carmen Gutierrez for her wonderful words (about city staff help during the IGNC’s Fiesta Amistad activities over the weekend.) It saves me from having to thank everybody. I just want to reiterate, I want to thank everybody, and I’m not going to go through everyone, because I’ll forget someone, but everybody that worked hard on the Fiesta Amistad, all the departments and the staff who participated in that. We had some folks who worked on the Amistad Games, and I think that’s going to be something that we’re very excited about. I want to thank Mr. Michael Garcia, Mr. Jose Garza and Ms. Ramon, everybody that worked on that.

“Finally I want to thank our police department and our marketing team and everybody that participated with ‘Ernie,’ I think it’s just a wonderful way for our police department and our other employees and departments who participated to foster positive community engagement, so we really want to thank them,” Sheedy finished.
