Sul Ross Eagle Pass expansion hits snag

The Texas State University System (TSUS) and Sul Ross State University (SRSU) met with
Eagle Pass officials earlier in January to inform them that the 2022 land donation for the
site of a comprehensive four-year university will not materialize.

The university is reassessing alternatives to expand educational opportunities after more
than two years of working towards this vision. The generous land donor was unable to
resolve issues related to the property that were needed to complete the donation.
TSUS has reserved approximately $30 million in facilities funding for a stand-alone
academic building, including a student center, once an appropriate location has been
secured. The system anticipates beginning the process to identify a feasible site in
early 2025.

“Sul Ross and the TSUS remain committed to providing high quality education
opportunities for the Middle Rio Grande Region,” said President Carlos Hernandez. “We are
actively re-evaluating alternative options both in the immediate and intermediate
timeframe.”

Hernandez said that while the realization of a new, physical campus has been delayed,
progress on an independent university in Eagle Pass continues with expansion into
freshman and sophomore level programming (H.B. 1022 by Rep. Eddie Morales) on the
agenda for the 89th Legislative Session, which began last week.

“We will continue to work with stakeholders and donors to find a path forward,” said
Hernandez.
