Del Rio’s boys’ basketball team just missed out on a chance for its first district win in its 30-6A opener.
It wasn’t as close in the team’s second district game.
The Rams trailed by 12 points after the first quarter and had to play catch up the remainder of the contest, falling at Laredo Nixon Tuesday, 78-52.
The loss drops the Rams to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in district.
Del Rio was down 27-15 after one period of play, but the Rams defense tightened up in the second quarter, holding Nixon to just 13 points. By halftime, Del Rio was down, 40-27.
The Rams’ offense was never able to get on track, scoring no more than 15 points in a quarter. Meanwhile, Nixon bounced back in the third, scoring 21 points to stretch its lead and putting greater distance between them and Del Rio.
Luis Arteaga led the Rams with 13 points. He was one of three Del Rio players to score in double digits, joined by Nick Rivera, who had 12, and J.J. Cervantes, who had 11. William Proffit had five points, Cesar Gavia and Eli Webster each had four points, Jorge Rubio had two points, and Mikael Perez had one point.
Nixon was led by Juan Marines, who scored 22 points; Adrien Medellin, who scored 21 points; and Ivan Tovar, who scored 13 points.
The Rams will have a week off before returning to action Dec. 29 at New Braunfels Canyon at 1 p.m. They’ll then be at Fredericksburg on Dec. 30 for a 2 p.m. contest.
Del Rio returns to district play Tuesday, Jan. 5, when they host the Laredo Alexander Bulldogs at 6 p.m. at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium.
