Del Rio police officers on Thursday arrested Eric Anthony Castillo,

Eric Castillo

36, a resident of Del Rio, and charged him with the offense of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony.

In an affidavit on file in the case, DRPD Detective Joe Castillo wrote that DRPD officers were dispatched to the intersection of Avenue G and East 12 th Street at 10:34 p.m. on Wednesday after the police department received a call about “shots fired” in the area.

“Officers were advised a male subject involved was located at the intersection. Upon arrival, officers located a Hispanic 30-year-old male subject with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Officers immediately performed aid to the male subject, who was actively bleeding, until Val Verde Regional Medical Center emergency medical services arrived,” Castillo wrote.

Castillo did not include the name of the “Hispanic 30-year-old male subject” in his report.

The 830 Times contacted the city’s communications and marketing director, Peter Ojeda, today and requested the name of the victim be released. Ojeda confirmed the man found by police was Alderete.

Castillo’s affidavit notes the injured man “stated a male subject had shot him on East 11th
Street.”

“(Through) further investigation, officers were able to identify the crime scene to be located at the 800 block of East 11 th Street. Officers located vehicle fragments in the roadway, bullet casings and other evidence to support a disturbance occurred. Officers were able to identify a vehicle of interest based off the vehicle fragments located and with the assistance of citizen support,” Castillo wrote.

The detective noted that “video surveillance corroborated information obtained by officers.”

“Officers identified a possible suspect truck to be identified as . . . a silver 2020 GMC Sierra Denali HD. Officers conducted a follow up at the registered owner address of 205 Braddie Drive, Del Rio, Texas. Officers made contact with the registered owner. The registered owner stated her family member, Castillo, is the sole operator of the GMC,” Castillo wrote.

In his affidavit, the detective noted the registered owner of the GMC “was in a frantic state of mind,” advising them that Castillo “had been distraught as well as suicidal earlier in the day.”

The detective further wrote, “Officers were advised of a possible destination where Castillo may be heading; the location was identified as the neighborhood of Rancho Del Rio (a semi-rural subdivision east of Laughlin Air Force Base and south of U.S. Highway 90).”

Castillo said officers searched the area, but were unable to located Castillo or the GMC.

“As officers arrived back to the station, they received notification via the license plate reader, the GMC was eastbound (on Highway 90) towards Brackettville. Officers requested assistance from outside agencies, Kinney County Sheriff’s Office, Texas (Department of Public Safety) Highway Patrol, United States Border Patrol and Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office. Ultimately, the GMC was located and stopped at the Border Patrol checkpoint (west of Uvalde),” Castillo wrote.

The detective said Castillo was confirmed to be the driver of the GMC.

“The GMC was found to have corroborating damage which was located at the crime scene. Castillo appeared disheveled and had minor scratches on his feet and left leg.

Castillo was given the opportunity to be interviewed after being provided with his Miranda rights. Castillo invoked his rights and did not wish to speak to officers. Castillo was placed under arrest for the offense and transported to the Del Rio Police Department for processing,” Castillo wrote.

He wrote the GMC was towed pending further investigation.

Castillo was magistrated on Friday by Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 George Salinas, who advised Castillo of his rights and set bail at $20,000. During the magistration procedure, Castillo also requested a court-appointed attorney.
