The second citywide cleanup is happening on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Del Rio
Civic Center located at 1915 Veterans Blvd.
The public event is held three-four times a year and allows citizens to collect garbage so it can
be transported over to the city’s landfill. Staff from Platform Waste Solutions, the waste
management company for Del Rio’s garbage pickups, will be on standby early in the morning to
help citizens.
Rene Maldonado, the city’s landfill coordinator, spoke with The 830 Times during the week to
give more details about cleanup and inform people to take advantage of this opportunity.
Citizens are allowed to bring household trash, stoves, washers, dryers, lawn mowers, bicycles,
building materials and brushes and limbs from trees.
“This is mainly for household trash and building materials, because building materials do get
charged if it comes across the scale (at the landfill),” Maldonado said. “This is one of the times
you should take advantage (of this event) to get rid of sheet rock, lumber . . . Anything else that
may be lying around the yard.”
Maldonado said the cleanup event will not accept batteries, televisions, air conditioner units,
refrigerators, central processing units (CPUs) or any liquid products such as paints or
automotive liquids. The main items citizens cannot bring to the event are electronics or other
items with a circuit board inside it.
Citizens must bring a valid ID, such as their driver's license, and their current water or trash bill
to indicate proof of residency.
Maldonado said the cleanup event is closed to contractors and is only open to citizens of Del
Rio. He mentioned how Platform Waste Solutions has been helpful with citywide cleanup events
throughout the years, adding, “We appreciate everything they do for the community.”
