City council approved a contract for the replacement of a new scale to weigh vehicles carrying
garbage entering and exiting the Del Rio City Landfill.
During the June 24 regular meeting, council members discussed a resolution to authorize and
direct the city manager to approve a contract in the amount of $211,990.69 to R&R Scales and
Measurements of Abilene, Texas, for the purchase and installation of a replacement scale at the
city’s landfill located at 189 Railway Ave.
Councilwoman Carmen Gutierrez made the motion to approve the resolution, and Mayor Pro-
tem Jim DeReus gave the second.
As mentioned in a pamphlet provided at the landfill, the scale at the landfill is needed for
collecting data for billing, regulatory compliance and efficient landfill management. The scale
determines the amount to charge citizens carrying loads of garbage when entering the landfill.
Citizens disposing of various building materials removed from buildings or structures undergoing
renovation or remodeling will be charged $45 per ton as determined by the scale.
Rene Maldonado, the city’s landfill coordinator, spoke with The 830 Times and gave more
information about the current scale and its replacement. He said there are no issues affecting
the current scale and that the contract discussed at the June 24 meeting is to acquire an
updated model.
Maldonado said scales from previous years at the landfill were mechanical, and the newer
scales, including the future replacement, have been digital. He mentioned the landfill staff have
been wanting to acquire a new model for a while.
