County Annex on Friday
night for its first-ever Halloween celebration.
County Commissioner Pct. 2 Juan Carlos Vazquez, who spearheaded organization of the
event, said he hopes to make it an annual celebration.
Vazquez and county staffers transformed the interior courtyard of the annex facility,
which was once an elementary school, into a Halloween wonderland, complete with
pumpkins and a wealth of spooky decorations, including several stations where parents
could take photos with their children.

Vazquez, his daughter Caroline and Caroline’s friend, Bryanna Castro, had a table where
they handed out candy to a steady stream of costumed kiddos, most accompanied by one
or both parents.

Other tables were manned by Del Rio City Councilwoman Ernestina “Tina” Martinez,
the staff of the Val Verde County Branch Library, service organizations housed in the
annex and several businesses, including AHIA Insurance Agency.
Vazquez took a break from candy distribution to talk to The 830 Times about the event.
“I’m super-excited. We’ve got our Halloween fest going on tonight, featuring a haunted
house, a lot of candy, a lot of pumpkins, lots and lots of children coming in,” the
commissioner said.
He pointed out several of the organizations housed in the annex were participating with
their own tables, including Belong, CASA of Val Verde County and Community Action
Partnership.
Vazquez also thanked Martinez for participating.

“I hope we can make this a tradition at the annex, way past my time. I’d like to do this
every year,” Vazquez added.
