Council Candidate Profile — Jorge “George” Vargas

Question #1: What in your experience, personal or professional, qualifies you for the position of Councilperson District 1?

“As a retired City of Del Rio firefighter, with years of EMS service, I bring proven commitment to public safety, community trust and a deep understanding of local government operations.

“Successfully managed a department, securing additional positions and upgraded equipment.

“Proven ability to manage budgets and make responsible decisions regarding tax dollars.

“Have contributed and continue to contribute over 20 years of community service through a nonprofit organization.

“I believe in open communications and an open-door policy. By listening, staying transparent and keeping the community involved, I make sure everyone feels heard and that decisions reflect the needs of the people.”

Question #2: What is your vision for this position for the next four years?

“Growth and infrastructure remain at the top of the list. It’s important that we take a more careful approach by completing due diligence and conducting comprehensive studies to confirm our capacity to support that growth.

“Public safety is also a top priority. By that, I mean ensuring we have enough City of Del Rio patrol officers on duty 24/7. As the city continues to grow, our current staffing levels are no longer sufficient.

“We need more firefighters to meet the growing demands of our community. Without adequate staffing and facilities, response times increase, putting public safety at risk and potentially impacting insurance rates for homeowners and businesses. We need additional personnel, facilities and equipment to address these challenges.

“I am committed to taking steps to ensure the city is financially stable and accountable, safeguarding taxpayer dollars through responsible budgeting and transparent decision-making.

“Financial stability and accountability are essential for effective leadership and a thriving community. Responsible budgeting, careful planning and transparent reporting ensure that resources are used efficiently and that taxpayer dollars are protected. By holding ourselves accountable and making decisions with long-term sustainability in mind, we build trust with the community and create a foundation for growth, safety and improved services.”
